Location Audio for Miami Video Shoots: Wind, Traffic and Getting Clean Sound

Bad audio can ruin a shoot faster than bad picture quality.

Viewers can overlook a soft focus. They can tolerate a shot that is slightly dark, or a white balance that shifts. However, they will not sit through five minutes of an interview where the subject is competing with an air conditioner, a leaf blower, and a plane on approach to the airport. Sound is the element that audiences notice without being able to name, and it is the element that most often cannot be fixed afterwards.

Miami presents unique challenges. Almost everywhere near the water, wind is a constant factor. The heat requires air conditioning to run continuously, making it impossible to simply switch it off. Additionally, outdoor locations are often under flight paths, beside traffic, and next to early-starting construction sites.

Listen carefully, not just rely on what you see.

A location scout typically focuses on framing, lighting, and access. Additionally, include a listening pass, and do it at the same time of day you plan to shoot. This is important because noise is as much a scheduling issue as it is a location issue.

Stand still and remain quiet for a full minute, and note:

  • Constant noise: air conditioning, refrigeration, pool pumps, generators, traffic hum, and building plant. This sits under everything and is hard to remove.
  • Intermittent noise: aircraft, sirens, deliveries, lawn maintenance, dogs, elevator chimes. These force retakes.
  • Reflective surfaces: glass, tile, marble and concrete produce reverberation that makes speech sound hollow. Miami interiors are full of all four.
  • Wind exposure: anywhere near open water, on a rooftop, or in a gap between buildings where air funnels through.
  • Foot traffic: whether the space can realistically be held quiet during takes.

Record thirty seconds on your phone at each location and listen back with headphones. The phone recording reveals things your ears filter out when you are standing there thinking about the shot. The Miami-specific problems

Wind

Near the water, there is almost always wind. A bare microphone in wind produces a low rumbling roar that no amount of processing can remove cleanly. Wind protection is not optional; it is standard equipment. For light breezes, foam covers are used. For anything more intense, furry windshields are necessary. For genuinely exposed positions, a blimp with a fur cover is essential.

Beyond just equipment, consider using the environment to your advantage. Place a vehicle, a wall, or a group of people upwind to shield the shot. Move your shot ten meters to the sheltered side of a structure. Additionally, shoot earlier in the morning when the wind is often lighter. A slightly less perfect frame with clean sound is preferable to the reverse.

Air conditioning

Interior shoots often face a recurring issue: the room is comfortable, but the microphone picks up unwanted compressor noise or system hum. If the system is turned off, the room becomes uncomfortable within twenty minutes. As a result, talent visibly gets warm, and in humid conditions, sweat becomes apparent on camera.

The effective approach is to cycle the system. Aggressively cool the space before the take, switch off the system for the actual take, and switch it back on between setups. Assign one person to manage the system, as otherwise it might get turned back on mid-take by someone trying to be helpful. Ensure that whoever controls the building system is easily reachable, since in many offices the switch is not located in the same room.

Aircraft and traffic

Under a flight path, aircraft come in predictable waves. Having someone spot the approach and hold the shutter release until the aircraft has passed can cost a few seconds but saves an unusable one. For traffic, shooting from the sheltered side of a building or slightly off the main road usually helps more than any equipment choice.

Humidity and equipment

Moving gear from a cold vehicle into humid outdoor air produces condensation on everything, including microphone elements, which can cause dropouts and crackle. Let equipment acclimatise before the shoot rather than unpacking and rolling. Keep silica gel with lavalier microphones, and carry spares, because a lav that has been taped against skin in Miami heat for two hours behaves differently from one used in a dry studio.

Microphone choices by situation

  • Sit-down interview indoors: a lavalier on each subject plus a shotgun on a boom overhead as backup. Two sources, recorded separately, so one failure does not end the take.
  • Interview outdoors: lavalier with full wind protection under clothing where possible, and accept the slight loss of clarity in exchange for wind rejection.
  • Walking and talking: wireless lavaliers, with someone monitoring range and interference. Miami is dense with wireless traffic, so scan frequencies on site rather than assuming.
  • Roundtable or panel: individual microphones rather than one shared, since a shared microphone forces compromise on every voice.
  • Ambience: always record a minute of room tone at every location, with everyone silent. This is what the editor uses to bridge cuts, and it takes sixty seconds.

That last item is the most frequently skipped and the most frequently regretted. Adding room tone costs nothing and is impossible to recreate afterward.

Monitor properly, or you are guessing

Someone must be monitoring with closed-back headphones throughout the entire recording. They should be watching the levels closely, rather than glancing at the meters occasionally.

Set levels with headroom instead of making them as loud as possible. A recording that peaks conservatively can be brought up cleanly; one that has clipped cannot be fixed. Record a safety track at a lower level where the recorder allows it.

Do a real test before the first take

Have the subject speak at the volume and in the position they will actually use, not just a polite test count. People tend to get louder and more animated once the interview begins. A level set against a quiet "testing one two" will likely clip on the first real answer.

What cannot be fixed later

Modern noise reduction is genuinely effective, but it has limitations that are worth knowing before you rely on it.

  • Steady background hum can often be substantially reduced.
  • Clipping and distortion cannot be reversed because the information is lost.
  • Heavy reverberation in a tiled room can only be reduced slightly.
  • Wind rumble can sometimes be salvaged, but often it cannot, depending on the severity.
  • Overlapping speech recorded on a single microphone cannot be separated.
  • Aggressive processing can make voices sound thin and artificial, a quality that viewers often notice, even if they can't pinpoint why.
